Over the years, I’ve had some truly stellar coffees from Mexico. If I were to collectively assess them, I’d say I really enjoy them for their bright and familiar combos (like chocolate-covered orange peels or raisins). At one point, I even expressed to Botzonians that coffees from Mexico would make the best-elevated diner coffee…
Juan Carrizosa’s coffee’s description seemed highly atypical in my buying experience for a green coffee from Mexico – “Strawberry and hibiscus.” Um…what? I was eager to cup it and hopefully affirm that this flavor combo truly existed from an unexpected origin.
Well, it’s on the menu now, so you can guess how the cupping went (glorious). The berry is real. The honeyed sweetness is real. The hype is REAL. I didn’t pass out, but every hit of my cupping bowl was a bit of a flavor system shock. This is one of the most bomb coffees from Mexico (well frankly, anyway) I’ve tasted. It’s a constant reminder to never question what flavors are possible in coffee from a particular place. If you’ve ever had a Mexican coffee in the past, order this one to jolt your system a bit (always a good thing for the self-proclaimed coffee nerd extraordinaire).
