The Botz menu has had three amazing Ethiopian coffees, but deep down I really wanted to provide some other coffees from East Africa, namely from Kenya (shhhh…don’t tell the rest of the menu, but Kenyan coffees are low-key my favorite). That’s because double-washed and fermented, Kenyan coffees offer super bright, floral, and complex cups. This particular lot was a standout on the cupping table because of its laser-beam acidity, dark sugar sweetness, and juiciness (having characteristics similar to a tart juice).
If you’re in my close confidante circle, you already know I recently got aggressively into natural wine (I’m borderline obsessive - shocker, I know). I am hilariously amateur at tasting wine and understanding its nuance, but I will say that I find this coffee similar in nature to a Riesling wine by Daniel and Jonas Brand. Floral, biting, and fresh, like red currants, I fell in love with that “Brand” wine as I watched the whole bottle evaporate in front of me like bubbles among loved ones. I literally said out loud, “I wish I could find a coffee that tastes like this,” beans that captured the dimension in my admittedly janky wine chalice, and also, the good vibes that accompany being able to share something special with people you care about. Miraculously, one sample later, I was experiencing the same profiles in my cupping bowl, except with the added layer of a small Rolo melting in your mouth, which I perceive to be, the ultimate combo (told you I was a wine n00b). And I’m equally as excited to pour you a cup of this brew in the delightfully janky (or pretentious) mug of your choosing.
But I didn’t just buy this coffee because of its quality. As a small roaster and green buyer, sometimes I feel like a little minnow in a big ocean of beautiful and experienced Atlantic salmon. When someone shows me kindness and answers my green coffee questions, I feel very confident in working with them as a partner (shout-out to Atlantic Specialty Coffee). Gachatha AB represents a constant reminder to help aspiring coffee enthusiasts, aficionados, and professionals. Remember, no coffee question is too silly! Same goes for wine, sommeliers, so I WILL be inquiring about Rolo and Riesling pairings at my next tasting.
