I had heard of the Parainema variety before and read about its success in the Honduras Cup of Excellence, but had never scored a sample to try it myself.  When I received one from Collaborative Coffee Source, I was eager to slurp it and see what the fuss was about.  After cupping the coffee, I immediately bought myself a first-class ticket to the HYPE TRAIN.  All aboarddddd, Botzonians! Botz will be your conductor on this tasty expedition—destination: the hybrid seasonal tastes of September.

This coffee is characteristically “Botz menu” – one part approachable, another part unique and perplexing.  It tastes like cherry cola with a caramel cake aftertaste (my aunt and I just made one for my Mom’s birthday, so I can put my full confidence in this flavor note), and as it cooled, subtle tropical notes started to emerge.  Kind of like the joyful chaos that comes with picking up all your favorite snacks at the movie theater at once – diverse sweet, acidic and caramel-y flavors that magically marry when combined in one bite (or in this case, sip).

Although it’s still hot out, we’re late into summer here in Indiana and fall is looming.  This particular coffee reminded of that weird in-between, sandwiched-seasons moment where you don’t want summer to end, but you’re excited for all the crispness fall brings.  It had a bright citrus acidity that reminded me of longer days and brighter nights, yet its aftertaste had me strolling down Fran Lin Parkway (my favorite Munster street) with a warm cookie under bright orange and yellow trees.  The floral aroma had me perusing Lowe’s outdoor section to find a new garden summer addition, yet the body of the coffee was round and comforting, making me want to curl up in my favorite thrift store sweaters.  It’s a coffee that will help ease your hot-to-cold weather transition or expedite it.  Like bringing your pumpkin to the beach.
