Over the years, I’ve seen some really intriguing flavor notes on the bags of some of my favorite roasters. I’ve chatted intensely with many close coffee brewing nerds, and I’ve come to find that one of the most controversial flavor calls is reminiscent of some of our favorite sugar bomb cereals…
While some scoff at the “fruit loops” note, I tend to embrace it, since cereals from childhood are probably some of our strongest flavor-memory associations. Tasting Solemo recently made me realize I’d like to implore all Botzonians to think differently about flavor notes. When you see “fruit loops” on a bag, you should not expect your coffee to taste exactly like the toucan version (although it could come close if you splash it with some perfectly frothed milk…this is the closest I’ve gotten). Instead, think of the fruity, energetic, and sugary flavors that made your mouth tingle as a wee one. Once the coffee has been brewed, it should evoke the same sense of joyful chaos! Does it have a nice zip that makes you think of any vibrant colors (doesn’t the yellow fruit loop kind of make you think of lemon)? Do you immediately want another sip of your coffee, motivated by the same gusto you had when you dove with your spoon into a heap of rainbow chunks? Are you left with a fruity finish that still lingers into your 8am history class (or office meeting)? If the answer to all these questions is “yes,” then your roaster deserves to put fruit loops on the bag with childish optimism. If “no,” then maybe another note would better express the coffee’s flavors.
Solemo was one of those coffees that gave me a cereal flashback. As I was cupping, there was a note I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It reminded me of some mixed berries I’d have at a summer pool party on a fruit tray, but it seemed softer and slightly sweeter. Purple and blue rushed to my mind, and then it came – those little itsie bitsie berries in Captain Crunch! Pairing that with a buttery body and gentle apricot acidity, the coffee was simultaneously refined and playful. Against my better judgment, I didn’t put “Captain Crunch berries” on the bag, for fear of flavor outcry, but if it reminds enough people of it, I may be bolder in the future. Hope you absolutely chug Solemo, and it takes you candy crushing down memory lane, like it’s been taking me!
