There are some coffees that introduce you to thought-provoking new flavors, and then there are others, like old friends from childhood, that gently remind you how delicious your experiences to-date have already been. Brewing San Agustin Loxicha is soaking in all the buttery glory that greets you at your favorite diner, as recognizable as the bell on the door. It is rediscovering the strange magnificence of your pantry staple trail mix. It is the five-ingredient, back of the chocolate chip bag, cookie recipe that mixed with love and attention somehow produces a baked nugget of joy more enticing than anything you’ve sampled beyond your city’s borders. San Agustin Loxicha is a reminder that the tastes of your routine, of your everyday life, are anything but ordinary.

This coffee is balanced and offers soft fruit characteristics, like pears, complemented by familiar baking spices you’d find in your favorite coffee cake. It is clean and sweet, and each pour is as satisfying and soul-hugging as a warm slice of pie.

This brew has a pronounced clarity, crispness, and familiarity that I find very inspiring. It motivates me to brew with the closest attention, to stick with what I know, and to do these little beans justice. Kind of hard to explain, but I imagine this is how grandparents feel when they make their loved ones their favorite dish – a fierce dedication to tradition, wanting to get it right, the pride in delivering a comforting crowd-pleaser. Sometimes the most recognizable flavors, arguably the “simplest”, are the ones that inspire you to push yourself to be better. The challenge of paying homage, to treats you know by heart, to the care shown by the producers of these extra-exquisite beans, is one Botz embraces humbly and with pride.

A quick Botzonian confession – despite my obsession with tasting coffee from around the world, I have not had many coffees from Mexico, and the ones I’ve had, I’ve found to be predominately nutty. I love nuts, but they make up an embarrassingly large part of my diet, so when I’m drinking coffee, I’m looking for more. San Agustin Loxicha has shown me the light, and I can’t wait to taste what Mexico has to offer.
