I remember the first time I was passed a fondue stick, a huge plate of fresh strawberries, and a witch’s cauldron of bubbling dark chocolate. For the first time in my life, I needed no direction to complete the task at hand. It was a moment of clarity – stab, dunk, snarf, and repeat.
DUNK! DUNK! DUNK! I watched as everyone aggressively chomped on their chocolate-covered strawberries after a fresh dunk-a-roo. It was a race to finish the plate, as everyone was simultaneously obsessed with the burst of strawberry sweetness and chocolate bitterness combo (hilariously, this kind of reminds me of some importer cuppings when every roaster present finds the most delicious coffee…it’s a race to the bottom of the bowl).
Botz’s new coffee, Keramo from Ethiopia, is naturally-processed and brought me back to my chocolate fondue days for two reasons. First, I always believe there should be one “fun” coffee on the Botz menu. “Fun” coffees tend to have a little extra wow-factor to them and surprise you from the moment they hit your burrs. Immediately fruity and different, you realize you may have stepped out of your brew-zone for a moment! Second, just like chocolate fondue seems like a special occasion (unless you have your own fondue set for regular dunking…), the brewing experience may seem a bit more prized or cherished. Many coffee brewing nerds have mentioned to me that they usually have one cup of a naturally-processed coffee a day for its fruity invigoration properties. They then continue on with delicious but tamer washed coffees.
Imagine starting your day off with this. Keramo immediately leads with a strawberry daiquiri aroma and flavor. Its body is heavy and saturated like a heaping spoon of strawberry jam. As it cools, you’ll start to notice subtle stone fruits like peach and cherry. Every sip has a HUGE finish of fruits all covered in melted dark chocolate. My recommendation is to be a bit greedy when filling your cup if you order this bag to drink at home with loved ones. Each refill from your drip machine is like a chocolate fondue dunk…there’s only so much strawberry goodness until it’s all gone!
